Behind the 4th wall

It's been a busy few weeks, with one minor update after another, but it's only today that we're launching this major new version of Minimal Roleplay, behind the 4th wall.

A few words of introduction

This new version brings the much-requested OOC chat feature to Minimal Roleplay, allowing you to centralize the entire progress of a role-playing game.

This update has been a long time coming, as we've been working a lot on Minimal Roleplay's architecture to solidify the platform and optimize the code, which is why this update doesn't add much.

In the future, these changes will allow us to develop future features with greater ease and flexibility, and thus speed up the release of new features.

Oh, and I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that Lucas (lead dev) and I will be working full-time on Minimal Roleplay from November 1, which should, once again, greatly speed up our development.

The Out Of Context Chat

During a role-playing game, we try to focus on the character we're playing. But at many points, we'll need to clarify things with our game master, get organized, and prepare for what's to come. These moments are obviously not roleplay.

Most players use Discord, on private servers or on ours, to have these discussions. The big problem is that we talk about a lot of things on Discord and the subjects can get mixed up, so it's hard to keep track. We've also seen players do this directly in their game, writing messages in brackets or parantheses, just as you might do on mmorpgs.

This is where the OOC chat comes in. This chat, closely linked to a game, can be accessed by clicking on the new dedicated icon at the top of your screen.

Clicking on it brings up a new sidebar, and to show the distance between the game and the out-of-context, we've chosen a lighter color. Players shouldn't be able to confuse the game with this chat.

Just like in-game messages, OOC messages will create notifications, so there's no chance of missing anything!

We've also decided to integrate dice rolls, which we think can be very useful, especially for initializing characters etc. Make good use of it!

And when the badges/stickers will come in, you'll be able to send some here. Your selected title will also appear below your nickname.

Optimizations and architecture

As I said above, we've carried out a major overhaul of Minimal Roleplay's architecture, so it's not very interesting to talk about, but here's some information nonetheless.

We've reworked the entire live server connection system, which is what allows you to receive live messages without reloading your page. You can now connect to multiple locations and receive messages everywhere without disconnecting.

The entire architecture of the game tables has also been redesigned to accommodate the next update, onboarding, and an introduction to single-player scenarios.

We work on this type of optimization with every update. The idea is to keep optimization as close to perfection as possible, so that your experience is as smooth and stable as possible.

Multilingual

I didn't write an article last week, but we've launched the French version of minimal roleplay. And at the same time, a whole translation system that allows us to bring translations to the entire Minimal Roleplay environment very simply.

It's quite possible that we'll soon see Spanish, German, Korean, Japanese and many other versions. If you're interested in translating, we'd love to hear from you! Please don't hesitate to contact us.

The last word

We hope you enjoy this update, and we'd like to thank you once again for your unwavering support. Minimal Roleplay is going from strength to strength, our growth is good and we can't wait to give you even more!
