Today, role-playing games remain a very elitist universe, both for players and creators.
Our ultimate goal is to break down the barriers to entry, allowing everyone to discover this world and a wide range of both mainstream and independent works.
When thinking about role-playing games, the first image that often comes to mind is that of bulky books. Although some publishers take the opposite approach, it is still common to be faced with manuals of several hundred pages to read before even being able to start playing. If experienced players are starting to feel weary, imagine the discouragement for those discovering role-playing for the first time.
Beyond the rules, and except for rules-light games, embarking on a role-playing game session also involves preparing a scenario and having confidence in it. For many, this step is a source of anxiety, requiring a lot of rewriting and preparation that becomes both time-consuming and stressful.
Once the preparation is done, you first need to find players, coordinate schedules, and maintain long-term engagement. Many quickly lose motivation and struggle to keep the necessary pace for role-playing to persist.
Of course, all this has a cost. While many role-playing games, particularly independent ones, manage to offer accessible prices, some require the purchase of multiple books — rulebook, scenario book, etc. — which quickly raises the overall price.
New players struggle to take the plunge: the entry requirements are too demanding. While they recognize the appeal of role-playing, they quickly feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information to absorb. Add to that the challenges related to preparing and organizing sessions, and many give up in the face of these multiple obstacles.
Many players hesitate to invest in new games, hindered by a learning curve deemed too slow. While many buy these games, few actually play them. They generally prefer to stick with systems they already know, often from the mainstream classics.
Beyond the preparation challenges, many players and game masters give up due to lack of time, facing logistical issues and lack of commitment from other participants. Additionally, fears, disabilities, and anxieties complicate the experience even further.
For role-playing game publishers, the situation is equally concerning. Beautiful works are created, often acclaimed for their creativity and richness, but they struggle to find a lasting audience. While initial sales may be promising, these games quickly fall into obscurity after their launch. Maintaining player interest requires constant and substantial effort, making it difficult for many projects to survive in an already saturated market.
To address these challenges, publishers offer initiation kits. While some are free, others can have a significant cost. However, one problem persists: their accessibility. Finding them can be a real challenge, and most require going through the rules and scenario preparation before being able to start playing.
Another approach taken by publishers is to organize initiation sessions at events, such as conventions. These sessions allow players to discover the basics of the universe and get a glimpse of the rules, but they are typically run by an experienced game master. While the experience is immersive, it is not very focused on learning the mechanics. Unfortunately, when you buy a role-playing game, it doesn’t come with a professional game master included!
Online role-playing platforms are multiplying, offering solutions to certain problems like availability or finding players. However, few focus on accessibility for newcomers, truly simplifying the process of discovering role-playing games.
We still have plenty of surprises to reveal, but patience! See you in 2025 to discover all the new features :)
